What is the true purpose of "Their Eyes are Watching God"

Their Eyes are Watching God is a novel that was written in 1936 by African-American writer Zora Neale Hurston. Hurston through her novel wanted to prove that the purpose of reading this novel was for being self aware, the path of a true journey, self discovery and thus empathy people feel for one another. Janie is the main character in the novel where the reader sees her go through a tough life journey with many experiences and encounters involved. The journey Janie passes through makes us gain a strong empathy towards her since she has went through a process of a harsh self-discovery. Janie has been with many guys that were a big part of her life, who some only wanted her to be a subservient and others treated her like a possession. In this case, Janie has to fight to find her real self and become free, therefore she only discovers her own value of life when she meets tea cake which is the guy that changed her view towards the word and the people in it.

Janie's nanny was really concerned to find Janie a suitable husband that is in the high class to allow Janie to have a rather great materialistic life. So, nanny dins her a husband called logan Killicks who is wealthy man. As soon as she marries Logan she find out that she cant continue the rest of her life with him because he is dull and she cannot stay with a man without love and adventure. Therefore, she marries another man who she believes who will allow her to find herself. what she thought technically did not happen and the relationship between Joe (her second husband) and Janie started to fade away. When joe started feeling unwell and then passes away many ideas started floating in Janie's mind and one of them was that she wants to be independent. The first thing she did was to remove the coverage he made her wear on her head since that coverage portrayed that she is under his complete control, hence once she removed it she felt the freedom and independence. Additionally, as stated before the only person that allowed her to discover herself and encouraged her to take chances, cross boundaries was tea cake. By finding this lover she fulfils her needs and desires since Janie was able to explore the world and herself. She discovers freedom, and she finally stretches towards the horizon as she has always dreams of when she was younger.

Overall, Janie may have had to undergo a large amount of sufferings and pain to reach to the point of discovering her true beautiful self, however she come to the understanding towards the end that all she needed in order to grow was confidence, which she found only when she met tea cake.

  1. I really enjoyed how you showed progression of Janie's character through here self-exploration. One thing that you could have touched on is what you will forever take with you from the book. What will you not forget about it?

  2. I like how you used the example of Janie's grandmother, Nanny and gave insight to her good intentions for Janie but later, Janie doesn't really return the favour after her death, but instead showed signs of hatred. But when you said that her confidence was only found when she met Tea Cake, I disagree with that. Because it sort of takes courage and confidence to run away from your first husband, leave your second and then even ignore comments received from society. She was confident throughout the story, maybe she just REALIZED it after Tea Cake's death perhaps.
