Textual Analysis :Kool A.D
In Kool A.D.’s guide on “How to pay for a baby”, he uses
colloquialism and incomprehensible slang diction to portray his point of views
on raising a baby for the first time to his targeted audience. While reading
this text it is evident that the chose of idiolect used by the author
illustrates that he is trying to entertain the readers in some ways. In
addition to that, he is being critical to the society and trying to persuade
clueless teens not to have kids at such a young age. It is evident that A.D
does not use formal articulated language in this column because for example, in
the third paragraph A.D. uses a phrase “Hella empty buildings… hella different
tasks”. This example depicts that his choice of diction is amusing to the
reader, however while some phrases may seem slang, there is still a strong
hidden meaning behind the main theme he is trying to send out through those
phrases. Furthermore, the way the author says “….they stay sh**ing themselves
so much you gotta buy them disposable pants for every single time they take a
sump for like two years” illustrates that the language used in this text is
aimed for young parents. The reason behind this is because there is use of
swear words in that sentence and also throughout the text which allows the
reader to conclude that the tone used is humorous and not really expressed in a
serious manner, thus the syntax of words are arranged into an entertaining
idiom. If this text was aimed for educated, high-class parents then A.D. would
have used a different dialect, such as formal or even informal language to represent
his argument. To conclude, this specific text had the overall purpose of
expressing A.D’s stance on paying and raising a baby at a young age by using slang
terminology and entertaining twists as well. The use of swear words and what
teens call ‘the cool language’ helps the reader understand that this text is
written for young uneducated humans.
